Richard “Dick” Raymond Harper of Pinellas Park, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2018 surround by his loving family at his bedside. Dick was born in Queens, NY on January 28, 1941 to Samuel Harper and Gladys Erikson. Dick joined the US Marine Corps in 1959, serving as a Radio Telegraph Operator. He served two tours in Okinawa, Japan, as well as tours in the Philippines, Thailand, and the 3rd MarDiv Fleet Marine Forces. Dick served with honor until 1962, after which he returned to his home in Queens. In 1972, he headed west and settled in Tucson, AZ. where he married his wife Cheri Linn. Dick was an avid outdoorsman, spending his free time camping with his family, hunting and fishing. Dick and Cheri moved to St. Petersburg, FL. in 1997. Dick has been an active member in his community with the Men’s Club, VFW and American Legion. During the last 10 years, Dick proudly served with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department as a school crossing guard.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Cheri, his son Bill Harper and daughter Allison Harper (James Carter) of TX., daughter Dawn (Scott) Bennett of AZ., son Daniel (Maari) Harper of OH., and his sister Lauren (Bob) Salimando of TX., as well as his 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 5 nieces and 1 nephew.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, stepfather Lawrence Mirabella, son Gary Wayne, brother Robert and sister Linda. Dick will be greatly missed by his entire family and his many friends.
Per Dick’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services conducted. The family asks in lieu of flowers or gifts, and to honor Dick's character, that all who wish to participate make a donation to their local hospice or Veteran’s organization.
